Damien McKay
Damien McKay is a Chartered Civil and Structural Engineer and the founder of HD McKay. With more than two decades of industry experience, he established the practice with a belief that architecture, engineering, and project management should work in unison—not in isolation. Under his leadership, the company has grown from a specialist engineering service into a fully integrated consultancy delivering coordinated, efficient, and design-led solutions across Ireland. Damien’s expertise spans residential, commercial, and public-sector projects, with a particular focus on clear communication, risk reduction, and strong technical foundations that support high-quality design outcomes. He is dedicated to building a team culture rooted in collaboration and continuous improvement. Outside the office, Damien enjoys time with his family, exploring the Donegal landscape, and keeping an eye on the latest developments in engineering and construction.
Shirley Boyle
Shirley is an experienced Office and Quality Manager with a strong background in compliance, process optimisation, and systems governance across global organisations. At HD McKay, she leads the management and maintenance of the ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System, oversees financial administration, and ensures efficient day-to-day operations across the consultancy. Her career includes senior roles in operational excellence, regulatory compliance, and business analysis, giving her a unique ability to streamline workflows and support multidisciplinary teams. Outside work, Shirley enjoys continuous learning and has completed numerous professional courses across leadership, data, and process improvement.
Dr. Shaun Friel
Dr. Shaun Friel is a Chartered Civil Engineer with more than 20 years’ experience across major public-sector infrastructure, materials technology, and civil engineering delivery. His background spans research, highways, water infrastructure, quarry operations, and product development, supported by a PhD in Civil Engineering and postgraduate qualifications in project management. At HD McKay, Shaun leads complex civil engineering projects with a focus on technical rigour, risk reduction, and practical, well-coordinated solutions. Known for his analytical approach and calm leadership on site, he brings deep expertise in materials performance and infrastructure delivery.
Ronan Farrell
A Chartered Structural Engineer with extensive experience across Ireland, the UK, and Australia, Ronan specialises in the design, assessment, and remediation of residential, commercial, and mixed-use structures. His work at HD McKay includes structural design, I.S.465 assessments, vacant homes inspections, and oversight of defective concrete block remediation. Ronan previously delivered major multimillion-pound retail projects in the UK and has a strong track record in project leadership, stakeholder communication, and mentoring junior engineers. He is committed to delivering robust, efficient design solutions that stand the test of time. Away from engineering, Ronan enjoys travelling and exploring the outdoors.
Emma-Louise Hannigan
Emma-Louise is a Registered Architect with 15 years’ international experience delivering large-scale education, commercial, and residential projects across Ireland, the UK, and Australia. As a former Associate and Education Sector Lead with HLM Architects, and previously a Senior Associate at Woods Bagot Melbourne, she has led large scale, complex, multi-stakeholder projects from early strategy through to delivery. She is highly skilled in project leadership, stakeholder engagement, design management, and multidisciplinary coordination, bringing strategic insight and a collaborative working style to every project. Her approach emphasises clarity, innovation, and context-responsive design, ensuring outcomes that are both rigorous and meaningful for clients and communities. Since returning to Donegal, Emma-Louise has been committed to contributing to high-quality built environments across the region, applying her international experience to local needs and challenges. Outside of practice, she enjoys family life in the northwest and exploring the landscapes that continue to inspire her work.
Tracy Murphy Wilson
Tracy is an Assistant Engineer with 20 years’ experience across engineering, construction, and architectural practice. Her expertise includes construction oversight, structural and construction drawings, tender documentation, planning applications, and regulatory compliance. Tracy has worked across residential, commercial, and public projects, collaborating closely with planning authorities, consultants, and local government bodies. With qualifications accredited by IEI, CIOB, and SCSI, she brings strong technical knowledge and practical project experience to HD McKay’s multidisciplinary team. Outside of work, Tracy enjoys architecture, design, and contributing to community-focused projects.
Ronan McLoone
With over 20 years’ experience in architectural and construction documentation, Ronan brings deep technical expertise to the preparation of planning, tender, and construction drawings. His background includes fire technology, site surveying, BER assessment, and detailed knowledge of Building Regulations for both residential and commercial developments. At HD McKay, he supports a wide range of architectural and engineering projects, including surveys and drawings for defective concrete block remediation. Ronan is known for his accuracy, reliability, and practical understanding of construction processes. Outside the office, he enjoys good food, hospitality, and keeping an eye on developments in building design.
Angela De Jesus
Angela is an emerging Architectural Technologist with strong technical skills in retrofit design, statutory approvals, construction detailing, and energy-efficient solutions. Currently in the final stage of her BSc (Hons) in Architectural Technology, she has hands-on experience supporting planning applications, preparing technical drawings, and surveying mica-affected homes in line with remediation guidelines. Angela brings fresh thinking, precision, and a keen eye for design to the HD McKay team. When she’s not working on projects, she enjoys contemporary art and continues to create illustrations and original commissions.
